As you may already know, I should soon get the ADSL broadband access to the Internet. Since I'm using Windows 98 (don't laugh!), am I going to have some extra trouble?

What should I take care of specially?

Where are you guys, anyway?

That question can be answered two ways.

1. About Win98: Windows has STOPPED supporting this OS and therefor it's HIGHLY recomended that you upgrade to an OS that IS supported by updates and SECURITY FIXES.

2. About the connection: Drivers! That's all Win98 would need to know you have (or will) added a new method to connect to the internet.
Probably these drivers are added with the hardware. (even for XP users. for error fixes etc.)
If not, then you can download them on the webpage of the manufacturer. Confused
(Hé, don't look at me for there oddness of posting something online that enables you to go online)

Secondary to connecting to the internet, you should considder using a good FireWall AND AntiVirus Software.
As recomended software I respectively say: Comodo Firewall Pro (Free licence, they don't charge you a dime) And Avast Antivirus Home edition (this one is free, the pro edition costs you something)

About where WE are.

GO is moving stuff from his old house to a new one.
Ermuli is STILL uploading the internet and posting the links in a STAFF member only subforum.
ME? I'm checking if there might be the need for additional mirrors and I'm looking after the forum.
(Since it's still a small forum, that's not very much pressure for me.)

And it's basicly so that everyone is waiting for GO to have settled completely in his new home and start updating the site.
Cause the longer he waits with this, the more Ermuli has uploaded the internet. Laughing

Thanks for plenty of useful advice. Very Happy

Glad to see you're still alive.

I thought you all (God forbid!) went to the blue yonder to meet thy maker! Wink

Believe it or not, in five years of cruising along & across the Internet with Windows 98 I didn't have almost any security problem. Once I caught the CoolWebSearch toolbar (got rid of it successfully) while visiting an obscure cracks site, and that's all. I guess that's because of my friends without whom I never visit the Internet: AVG (Free Edition), Zone Alarm 5.5.094 (one of the last versions for Win 98 OS) and Ad-Aware SE 1.05. Those three tools and a little common sense kept me out of trouble.

On second PC there's also SpyBot Search & Destroy 1.4 which is great too. Even on that (newer) computer I use Windows 98 for surfing. I figured out that there are much more threats for XP, than for 98 (which I have patched with everything that came to hand). Also, I think that no one in their clear mind would make something nasty for Win 98 when there are only 37 of us in the world still using it. Wink

I'll try to rely on my old tried and trusted friends with ADSL too. It's only a much faster connection, but still basically the same thing, right?

I'll get the drivers/all the software required together with ADSL modem and cables, according to my new provider. Smile

Cheers, and keep up a good work!

Ditto. I recommend upgrading, too. Windows 98? Do you use SE (Second Edition) or the original? And do you use it because of gaming?
I recommend XP though it is full of security holes and only God knows how many patches has been released. You can have the automatic
updates on and patches are applied fluently or like me update manually about once a month because my version of Windows isn't
completely legal... Rolling Eyes. I like to know what's happening and when.

I use Symantec Client Security Corporate Edition 3.1.6.6000 for protection, but it isn't free at all. Spyware Doctor is also installed.
Windows XP integrated firewall is unplugged.

BTW, just bought 3 floppy drives. Two 3.5" (USB & integral) and brand new 5.25" integral which hasn't arrived yet. I tried to find 5.25" USB drive,
but there aren't any available. You'd have to build one and I suck in that area Laughing. I also got my first color laser printer.

I use the original Windows 98 on the old PC, and SE on the new one.

"If it ain't broken, don't fix it", so I'll stay with it. I repeat that my Win 98s (the plain one and SE) are both fixed with all the patches one can find in the universe, and I had no problem so far.

Glad you have made all those additions to your hardware arsenal. I'm surprised that anyone from a normal country (mine is excluded, naturally) can have a "slightly illegal" copy of Windows! Shame on you, Ermuli! I'll report you to the authorities ASAP. Evil or Very Mad

Cheers! Wink

Can I connect two different ADSL simultaneously to 1 pc? I have two routers for 2 different ADSL connections. Can i connect both working at the same time to 1 pc. Example One ADSL connection gives 2Mbps and another 1Mbps can I combine them and get 3Mbps?
